Lumen in Umbra presents an evocative journey through light and shadow, blending contemporary choral works with vibrant instrumental colors.

Under the direction of conductor Ivan Yohan, Lassenne Vocale opens with selections from Mark Smythe’s Song of the Sea, featuring Parts I & III, alongside the haunting Alone (A Demon in My View), with Smythe joining on electric guitar. The choir also performs Umbra Animae, an a cappella piece that explores the soul’s depths.

The program continues with Reena Esmail’s tender Even After All This Time.

After the intermission, experience the world premiere of Phillip Cooke’s Lumen in Umbra, a work inspired by the interplay of light and shadow, dedicated by the composer to Lassenne Vocale. The concert concludes with a rich palette of contemporary compositions: Ēriks Ešenvalds’ atmospheric Ancient Prairie; Jacob Narverud’s contemplative Sunflower; Aurélien Hallopeau’s rhythmic Analemme; and Elaine Hagenberg’s evocative By Night, combining piano, violin, cello, and percussion for a vivid sonic landscape.
